Insiders Speak Out for the First Time on Network TV about the Family’s History of Scandals & Tragedies

‘Dark Waters’ Airs Friday, Nov 4 at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT

PLUS: ‘Dateline’ to Release Podcast Episode Next Week on Case

Nov 1, 2022  – Friday’s new Dateline NBC at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT will reveal surprising and exclusive new details about the deaths and legal cases surrounding Alex Murdaugh, the South Carolina lawyer accused of killing his wife and son last year.

The two-hour broadcast, reported by NBC News’ Craig Melvin, will look at the family’s storied history, including the scandals of the last few years. The Murdaugh family first made headlines in 2019 when Alex’s son Paul was accused of crashing a boat while drinking with friends, resulting in the death of a 19-year-old woman. For the first time on network TV, insiders close to the accident, including one of the friends who was on the boat, reveal what they say happened that night, including Alex’s alleged involvement in the aftermath of the accident.

During the special, the father of one of the boat’s passengers, Marty Cook, tells Melvin that on the way to the hospital, shortly after the accident, Alex had called him to tell him it was his son Connor driving the boat, not Paul Murdaugh. Marty Cook explained, “We were fairly good friends coming up through high school and what shocked me was that, you know, he would be willing to use my son [Connor] as a scapegoat to get his son out of something that his son actually did.” He added, “You know, that hurt, you know. Thought I had a little better standing with him than that. But I don’t think anybody has any standing with Alex Murdaugh.” Click here to watch the exchange.

The special will also feature new reporting on what to expect in Murdaugh’s upcoming trial for the murder of his wife and son. He has pleaded not guilty.

Following Friday’s broadcast, Dateline will release a special podcast episode on Wednesday, Nov. 9. The podcast will feature a behind-the-scenes look at Dateline’s deep-rooted reporting, and Melvin will share his insights into the case, which he has reported on since the beginning.
