TODAY Is #1 in Key Demo Season to Date for 8th Straight Year

NEW YORK – June 6, 2023 – NBC News’ TODAY was the number-one morning show last week topping ABC’s “Good Morning America” in the key demo A25-54, marking four weeks at number one. Versus the prior year, TODAY improved its competitive position versus GMA for the fifth straight week.

Season to date, TODAY is the top-rated morning show in the key demo A25-54 for eight years straight and number-one in A18-49 for ten years straight.

TODAY HIGHLIGHTS:

Note: All three morning news shows were labeled as specials on Monday for the Memorial Day holiday.

KEY POINTS:

  • TODAY ranked #1 in A25-54 for the 4th consecutive week and for the 7th time in the last 9 weeks
    • This is TODAY’s longest A25-54 winning streak since April 2022 and its first demo win during a Memorial Day holiday week in three years (since week of 5/25/2020)
    • Vs. prior year, TODAY improved its competitive position vs. GMA in A25-54 for the 5th consecutive week
  • TODAY ranked #1 in A18-49 for the 36th time in the last 39 weeks
    • TODAY posted its biggest A18-49 win over CBS in 20 weeks (since week of 1/9/2023)

TODAY averaged 630,000 A25-54 viewers, beating Good Morning America by +37,000 (+6%) and leading CBS Mornings by +176,000 (+39%)                

  • TODAY has topped GMA for 4 consecutive weeks (and 7 of the prior 9 weeks, its best streak since April 2022) and outperformed CBS for 1,607 consecutive weeks
  • Compared to the same week last year, TODAY turned its A25-54 viewership gap turn into an advantage vs. GMA (+37,000 vs. -138,000 prior year) and improved its A25-54 viewership advantage vs. CBS by 73% (+176,000 vs. +102,000 prior year)    
  • TODAY improved its competition position vs. GMA in A25-54 for the fifth consecutive week compared to prior year

TODAY averaged 453,000 A18-49 viewers, beating GMA by +76,000 (+20%) and leading CBS by +198,000 (+78%)                

  • TODAY’s advantage over CBS is the largest seen in 20 weeks (since 1/9/23)       
  • Week-over-week, TODAY improved its A18-49 viewership advantage vs. CBS by 9% (+198,000 vs. +181,000 prior week)       
  • YoY, TODAY more than doubled its A18-49 advantage vs. CBS (+198,000 vs. +83,000 prior year, up 139%)    

TODAY averaged 2.622 million total viewers, leading CBS by +422,000 (+19%)                

  • TODAY has beaten CBS for 1,607 consecutive weeks (since 8/10/1992)       
  • Week -over-week, TODAY improved its total viewership advantage vs. CBS by 7% (+422,000 vs. +396,000 prior week)    
  • Compared to the same week last season, TODAY reduced its total viewership gap vs. GMA by 24% (-381,000 vs. -504,000 prior year)
