NBC NEWS/WSJ POLL: PUBLIC SOURS ON GOP TAX PLAN AS DEMOCRATS REGAIN LEAD ON ECONOMY

63 Percent Believe GOP Tax Plan Designed Mostly to Benefit Corporations and Wealthy

35 Percent Say Democrats Are Better on the Economy, Versus 30 Percent Who Say Republicans Are

By a Two-to-One Margin, Americans Believe Trump’s Approach Has Made Economy Better

DECEMBER 19, 2017 – Nearly two-thirds of Americans believe the Republican tax plan is designed mostly to help corporations and the wealthy, according to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

On the tax plan itself, which the House passed on Tuesday afternoon and which awaits Senate approval, 24 percent of Americans say it is a good idea, versus 41 percent who believe it’s a bad idea.

Democrats are better on the economy and taxes than Republicans – 35 percent to 30 percent – according to the poll’s numbers, marking the Democrats’ first lead on this question since 2013 and their largest since 2009.

The new poll also reveals that Americans, by a 2-to-1 margin, believe President Donald Trump’s approach has made the economy better rather than worse: 40 percent vs. 21 percent.

Democrats lead on dealing with sexual harassment (by 24 points), on looking out for the middle class (by 14 points) and on changing how things work in Washington (by 10 points), while the Republicans’ one issue advantage in the poll is on foreign policy, with 34 percent of Americans who think the GOP better handles that issue, versus 33 percent who pick the Democrats.
