Nightly News Wins All Five Evenings across the Board

The NBC Broadcast Tops Total Viewers Three of Last Five Weeks

Nightly News Ranks #1 among A25-54 and A18-49 for 50 of Last 51 Weeks

NEW YORK (July 19, 2016) – “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt” ranked #1 across the board for the week of July 11, averaging 7.9 million total viewers, outperforming “ABC World News Tonight” by +287,000 (+4%) and “CBS Evening News” by +1.36 million (+17%). The NBC broadcast won across the board on all five evenings and has topped total viewers for three of the last five weeks.

The week included Lester Holt anchoring from Nice on Friday, reporting on the attack in France. On that evening, Nightly News earned 7.3 million total viewers, leading ABC by +272,000 (+4%) and CBS by +1.49 million (19%). In the demo on Friday, Nightly News led CBS by +280,000 (19%) and ABC by +349,000 (25%).

In the demo, Nightly News averaged 1.9 million A25-54 viewers for the week of July 11, outperforming ABC by +210,000 (+13%) and CBS by +293,000 (+18%). Nightly News has led ABC by at least 200,000 A25-54 viewers for five consecutive weeks. The NBC broadcast averaged 1.34 million A18-49 viewers, topping ABC by +111,000 (+9%) and CBS by +240,000 (+22%). Nightly News has ranked #1 in A25-54 and A18-49 for 50 of the past 51 weeks.

Versus the same week last season, Nightly News saw gains across the board. It was the only evening newscast to see total viewer growth year over year and week over week. Season to date, Nightly News is the #1 evening news program in total viewers, A25-54 and A18-49 viewers.  

Weekly Highlights:

  • Nightly News averaged 7.9 million total viewers, leading ABC World News Tonight by +287,000 (4%) and CBS Evening News by +1.36 million (+17%).
  • Nightly News has won three of the last five weeks among total viewers.
  • Versus the same week last season, Nightly News saw gains in total viewers (+1%, or +43,000), A25-54 viewers (+1%, or +12,000), and A18-49 viewers (+2,000).
  • Nightly News averaged 1.9 million A25-54 viewers, outperforming ABC by +210,000 (+13%) and CBS by +293,000 (+18%).
  • Nightly News has led ABC by at least 200,000 A25-54 viewers for five consecutive weeks.
  • Versus the same week last season, Nightly more than doubled its A25-54 advantage over ABC by 159% (+210,000 last week vs. +81,000 a year ago) and increased its A18-49 lead by 34% (+111,000 last week vs. +83,000 last year).
  • Nightly News has ranked #1 in A25-54 and A18-49 in 50 of the last 51 weeks.
  • Nightly News averaged 1.34 million A18-49 viewers, topping ABC by +111,000 (+9%) and CBS by +240,000 (+22%).

Season to Date:

  • Season to date, Nightly News is the #1 evening news program in total viewers, A25-54 viewers, and A18-49 viewers.
  • Nightly News averages 8.63 million total viewers, +196,000 (+2%) ahead of ABC and +1.457 million (+20%) more than CBS.
  • Nightly News averages 2.1 million A25-54 viewers, leading ABC by +195,000 (+10%) and CBS by +430,000 (+26%).
  • Nightly News has seen the biggest gain among A25-54 viewers this season (+8,000).
  • Nightly News is posting a 188,000 viewer turnaround in its A25-54 lead vs. ABC.
  • Nightly News averages 1.5 million A18-49 viewers, outperforming ABC by +173,000 (+13%) and CBS by +371,000 (+33%).
