CHUCK TODD:

The Senate may send you a bill. When it comes to this idea of a terrorist on the no-fly list, they can’t buy a gun, create a waiting period in some form. Obviously Democrats want a very long one. John Cornyn’s amendment’s a very short one. Where do you sit on this issue?

PAUL RYAN:

Yeah, we’re looking at the Cornyn Amendment. We want to make sure we get this right. The question right now is if someone is on a terror watch list are the authorities notified as to whether a person on that list is trying to purchase a gun or not? That is the procedure right now. So the question is can we make sure that that procedure works the way it’s supposed to work? That’s point number one.

Point number two, you don’t want to deny a person the Constitutional rights without due process. So we have to be very con– We have to concern ourselves with Constitution, and rights. And we don’t want to deny a person their due process rights. That’s point number two. Point number three is the F.B.I. is telling us, “Be careful how you do this, so you do not undermine, or blow terrorism investigations.”

So we can’t just be very clumsy, and rush to judgment, and do something that actually harms our ability to do terrorist investigations. We’ve got to get it right. And we’re going to take a deep breath, and make sure that this is done correctly, so that the policy of making sure that the authorities know, and have time to respond to if a person who is on a terrorist watch list is trying to buy a gun, that they’re notified. That we want to make sure we get right.
