Trump Leads GOP Competitors Among Almost Every Demographic Group

Clinton, Sanders Beat Trump in Hypothetical General Election Matchup

President Obama Approval Rating at 50 Percent in the State

MARCH 6, 2016 – Donald Trump and former Sec. Hillary Clinton lead their respective competitors by double-digits in Michigan ahead of the state’s March 8 primary, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll.

In the GOP race, Trump holds 41 percent support from likely primary voters in the Wolverine State, followed by Texas Sen. Ted Cruz with 22 percent, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio with 17 percent and Ohio Gov. John Kasich with 13 percent.

Trump leads his Republican rivals in Michigan among men, women, independents, moderate Republican primary voters and conservatives; he is also ahead of Cruz by one point among white evangelicals, 30 percent to 29 percent. However, Cruz leads Trump among “very conservative” Republican primary voters, 43 percent to 30 percent.

In the Democratic race, Clinton leads Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) by 17 points with the party’s likely primary voters, 57 percent to 40 percent. Among the larger potential Democratic electorate, the race is closer with Clinton holding 52 percent support, eight points ahead of Sanders.

In hypothetical general-election matchups in Michigan, Clinton leads Trump by 16 points, 52 percent to 36 percent, while Sanders is ahead by an even wider margin, 56 percent to 34 percent.

President Obama’s approval rating stands at 50 percent among Michigan’s registered voters.
