TODAY Revisits Headline-Making Stories of the Past 20 Years in a Special Week-Long Series

NEW YORK—September 11, 2015 — All next week, NBC News’ TODAY will look back at some of the biggest headline-making events of the past 20 years and follow up with the people who were at the center of the stories. The special series, “Where Are They Now?” begins Monday, September 14.

Throughout the week, TODAY will share updates on stories that captivated the nation and the people involved including: Ashley Smith who was held hostage in 2005 by convicted courthouse killer Brian Nichols; the families of Laura Van Ryn and Whitney Cerak whose identities were mistaken for one another after a 2006 car crash; the McCaughey family, who in 1997 became the world’s first set of septuplets to survive infancy; Jessica Lynch, a US Army soldier who was rescued after being held captive by Iraqi Forces in 2003; and Amber Frey, the former girlfriend of Scott Peterson who testified against him in the 2004 murder trial of his wife, Laci Peterson.

The series continues on the Saturday edition of TODAY with the Heene family, who made headlines in 2009 when their youngest son, “Balloon Boy” Falcon Heene, was suspected of being inside a homemade helium balloon.
