Week-to-Week, NBC Broadcast Expands Lead over ABC & CBS Across the Board to Mark 4th Straight Win

Nightly Posts Gains in All Categories Week-to-Week and Year-to-Year

AUGUST 25, 2015 – “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt” scored its biggest total viewer and demo audiences in seven weeks (since week of 6/29/15) and delivered its fourth consecutive across-the-board win over the competition.

The NBC broadcast has been #1 among total viewers all nine weeks since Holt was named anchor and #1 across the board for eight out of nine weeks.

Week-to-week, the NBC broadcast widened its lead over both ABC and CBS in all categories and posted the biggest across-the-board gains of the three evening newscasts.  Nightly was the only newscast to grow across-the-board compared to the same week last season.

Nightly has now won among total viewers for 9 consecutive weeks, 14 of the last 17 weeks, and 302 of the last 309 weeks.

Season-to-date, Nightly is #1 in total viewers, A25-54, and A18-49.

Weekly Highlights:            

  • According to Nielsen Media Research Live+Same Day data for the week of August 17-21, Nightly averaged 8.246 million total viewers, +334,000 (+4%) ahead of ABC World News Tonight and +1.874 million (+29%) more than CBS Evening News.
  • Nightly averaged 1.981 million A25-54 viewers, leading ABC by +149,000 (+8%) and CBS by +532,000 (+37%).
  • Nightly delivered a 1.7 A25-54 rating, +2 tenths more than ABC and +5 tenths more than CBS.
  • Nightly averaged 1.395 million A18-49 viewers, +180,000 (+15%) higher than ABC and +408,000 (+41%) more than CBS.
  • Nightly delivered a 1.1 A18-49 rating, +1 tenth more than ABC and +3 tenths more than CBS.

Growth:

  • Week-to-week, Nightly posted across-the-board gains in total viewers (+4%, or +293,000), A25-54 viewers (+3%, or +50,000), and A18-49 viewers (+2%, or +30,000).
  • Compared to the same week last season, Nightly was up across the board in total viewers (+2%, or +201,000), A25-54 viewers (+7%, or +121,000), and A18-49 viewers (+1%, or +10,000).

Season-to-Date Highlights:

  • Nightly is averaging 8.667 million total viewers, outperforming ABC by +349,000 (+4%) and CBS by +24% (1.664 million).
  • Nightly is averaging 2.064 million A25-54 viewers this season, leading ABC by +18,000 (+1%) and CBS by +436,000 (+26%).
  • Nightly is averaging 1.480 million A18-49 viewers this season, leading ABC by +92,000 (+7%) and CBS by +371,000 (+33%).
