February 22, 2022 – NBCU News Group (NBC News, TODAY, MSNBC and CNBC) saw 168 million unique visitors in January, ranking as the #1 news organization in the US, and beating CNN, ABC News, CBS News, Fox News, New York Times and Washington Post. It was NBCU News Group’s strongest month since becoming a public-facing entity in April 2021. NBCU News Group was also #1 in total video minutes watched and total video starts in the month of December, holding that #1 spot for 8 months in a row (9th month in a row for minutes watched, since becoming a public-facing entity). 

CNBC Digital was the #1 non-portal brand in Business News for unique visitors for the month of January. It was CNBC’s strongest month since March 2021 with more than 88 million unique visitors. CNBC Digital also ranked #1 in Business News video for December with 15 million unique video viewers.

NBCNews.com reached over 100M unique visitors in January, the strongest month since January 2021. NBCNews.com ranked ahead of competitors such as The New York Times Brand, CBSNEWS.COM, WASHINGTONPOST.COM and ABCNews. Engagement with video on NBCNews.com also saw lifts in December, with video time spent per viewer at the strongest levels since early 2021.

MSNBC Daily & The Reidout Blog had their strongest month on record on MSNBC.com in January. In December, MSNBC video time spent per viewer ranked ahead of CNN.com for the 10th month in a row.

TODAY Digital had its second straight record month with 75 million unique visitors in January, surpassing 50M unique visitors for seven months in a row. TODAY also continues to rank among the top 10 entities in the Lifestyle category for video views and minutes and ranks among the top 5 entities for video viewers (December 2021). 

NBCU News Group’s streaming services, TODAY All Day and NBC News NOW, had top months, with NBC News NOW seeing nearly 78 million video views and more than 25 million hours watched. It was NOW’s strongest month since last January and the streaming platform’s third best month on record.

In addition, NBC News NOW aired a new digital special, Stars of Team USA, hosted by NBC News’ Savannah Sellers ​​to highlight the American athletes competing at the 2022 Olympic Winter Games – from fan favorites to new faces.

TODAY All Day saw its best month on record in January, up 16% versus the previous record and the prior month. The past five months have been the lifestyle streaming network’s strongest months to-date after launching in the summer of 2020.

In January, political strategist Symone D. Sanders was announced as an upcoming host for Peacock’s The Choice from MSNBC. Sanders’ announcement comes off the heels of MSNBC’s strategic focus on streaming in 2021 with the launch of The Choice from MSNBC on Peacock, the streaming destination for live, in-depth perspective and news. Sanders’ show will be featured alongside original programming hosted by Zerlina Maxwell, Mehdi Hasan, Ayman Mohyeldin and Katie Phang on The Choice from MSNBC.

NBCU News Group continues to rank in the top five of all podcast publishers in the US for January. It was the News Group’s second best listener month on record, with listenership up +22% versus January 2021. Plus, it was the News Group’s third best month on record for podcast downloads with more than 55 million global podcast downloads, up +21% versus the prior year. 

NBC News and TODAY podcasts each had one of their top three strongest months on record. TODAY has reached more than a million podcast downloads for a fifth straight month and more than doubled its downloads from the prior year. NBC News podcast downloads were up +23% versus January 2021. 

CNBC podcasts had their second straight record month in January, up +46% year-over-year.

In January, TODAY launched a shoppable recipe and commerce destination — TODAY Table — giving viewers across broadcast, digital and streaming a high-quality, start-to-finish mealtime experience. Users can access TODAY Table’s shoppable recipes at TODAY.com/Food, all made with ingredients that people can easily purchase from Walmart, which will quickly expand to include shoppable recipes and corresponding food segments on TODAY’s broadcast and in a series created for TODAY All Day, the lifestyle brand’s 24/7 streaming network.
