Craig Melvin Reports on New Ground-Breaking and Controversial Treatments For Alcoholism

July 19, 2017 In her first in-depth and intimate TV interview since being diagnosed with a brain tumor, TV and radio host Maria Menounos opens up to NBC News’ Megyn Kelly about the surgery she recently underwent for treatment, an ordeal that incredibly came in the midst of her own mother’s battle with stage 4 brain cancer. In the broadcast airing July 23 at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT., Kelly also sits down with Menounos’ mother, Litsa. Kelly will preview the interview Friday on “TODAY.”

Also on “Sunday Night,” NBC News correspondent Harry Smith sits down with Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon to discuss his own field of dreams. But the man who led the Cubs to their first World Series win in more than a century doesn’t just talk baseball. He tells the story of watching his beloved hometown of Hazleton, PA, a former coal mining town, deal with discrimination and resentment as it struggled to accept a new generation of Hispanic immigrants. Maddon has made it his mission to prove to Hazleton that this new generation of residents is going to enrich the town. His heartwarming support of that immigrant community is making a big difference on both sides of the ethnic divide.

Additionally, NBC News correspondent Craig Melvin reports on the latest approaches to treating alcoholism in the U.S. While experts have questioned rehab facilities’ heavy reliance on 12-step programs, people with alcoholism are seeking alternative treatments, including one radically different program that allows patients to continue drinking.
