THIS SUNDAY: SPECIAL EDITION OF “MEET THE PRESS WITH KRISTEN WELKER” TO EXAMINE THREATS TO DEMOCRACY IN 2024

Special Edition Broadcast to Look at Lessons Learned Since 2020 and Growing Threats of AI, Misinformation and More

May 23, 2024 — Meet the Press with Kristen Welker will air “The Threat to Democracy” this Sunday, a special edition broadcast focused on election security and democracy amid growing threats from misinformation and artificial intelligence in the lead-up to the 2024 election.

With more than half the world’s population set to cast ballots this year, the broadcast special comes as an NBC News poll has identified “threats to democracy” as a top issue at the voting booth this year.

Moderator Kristen Welker will take an in-depth look at the lessons learned from 2020, the preparations taking place to protect the vote in 2024, and novel threats to the voting process in conversations with state election officials, democracy and disinformation experts, and journalists and analysts. The broadcast will feature conversations with:

  • A bipartisan panel of Secretaries of State, including Jocelyn Benson (D-Mich.), Brad Raffensperger (R-Ga.), Adrian Fontes (D-Ariz.), and Al Schmidt (R-Pa.)
  • The Stanford Internet Observatory’s Renee DiResta, author of Invisible Rulers: The People Who Turn Lies into Reality; and The Atlantic staff writer Anne Applebaum, author of Autocracy Inc.: The Dictators Who Want to Run the World
  • The New York Times Chief White House Correspondent Peter Baker, McCain Institute Executive Director and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense Evelyn Farkas, former Presidential Commission on Election Administration Co-Chair Ben Ginsberg, and PBS Newshour Co-Anchor Amna Nawaz on challenges and threats to democracy.
