ALL NEXT WEEK – NBC NEWS EXAMINES THE “STATE OF THE STRUGGLE” – A DEEP-DIVE ON INEQUALITY IN AMERICA

As part of the network’s month-long coverage commemorating Black history, NBC News will take a deeper dive on the “State of the Struggle” with week-long in-depth reports examining how this country has grappled with inequality and whether there has been any change following the reckoning over racial injustice.

Reports will air across TODAYNBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, MSNBC, NBCNews.com and NBC News NOW beginning Sunday, February 21, 2021.

Some of the key programming highlights include:

TODAY

  • Anchor Craig Melvin reflects on this historic year withBlack Lives Matter co-founder Alicia Garza, Because of Her founder Eunrique Jones Gibson and author Ibram X. Kendi, examining what has changed and how much further the nation needs to go.
  • On 3rd Hour TODAY, NBC News technology correspondent Jake Ward speaks with a Harvard researcher who is studying how implicit bias can change over time. 

NBC NIGHTLY NEWS WITH LESTER HOLT:

  • Following a year of racial reckoning amid the pandemic, anchor Lester Holt reflects on the “State of the Struggle” in a personal essay.
  • NBC News correspondent Blayne Alexander sits down with Ahmaud Arbery’s mother, one year after he was killed, to discuss whether anything has changed in Georgia.
  • NBC News correspondent Antonia Hylton reports on a Texas community at a crossroads, as parents are pushing back against diversity and inclusion programs meant to unite the community. 
  • NBC News chief education correspondent Rehema Ellis interviews members of “Little Rock Nine”aboutinequality in education and the historic laws that have fueled politics and education today. 

MSNBC:

  • In coordination with his “Into America” podcast, MSNBC correspondent Trymaine Lee speaks with Malcolm X’s daughter Ilyasah Shabazz and Martin Luther King Jr.’s daughter Dr. Bernice King about having a freedom fighter as a father and the opportunities for advancement in this moment. 
  • MSNBC senior national correspondent Chris Jansing reports on Black women in Mississippi and Alabama who are working to both register and empower voters. 
  • Ali Velshi anchors from Birmingham, Alabama on Sunday, 2/21, hosting conversations with Black business owners, frontline workers and health care workers about civil rights and the economy.

NBC NEWS DIGITAL:

  • NBC News national reporter Janelle Griffith interviews Erika Shields, Louisville’s new police chief. Shields resigned from Atlanta’s police force after the fatal shooting of a Black man last year. Griffith also speaks with Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer about the criticism he has received for the hiring.
  • NBCBLK will offer a special look at a cross section of Black runners, who open up about the shooting of Ahmaud Arbery, who was killed while jogging. 
  • NBC News Latinowill feature interviews with Afro-Latinos on their plans to keep the Black Lives Matter movement alive. 
  • NBC News Digital will debut an online documentary on Minneapolis’ year of struggles, with a focus on a father and son who live across the street from where George Floyd was killed. 

NBC NEWS NOW: 

  • NBC News correspondent Priscilla Thompson reports on Black farmers who are looking to the Biden administration to dismantle discrimination at USDA. She will also interview Dr. Princess Dennar, who was removed from her post as the director of a residency program at Tulane University just five months after she filed a lawsuit alleging a pattern of discrimination and retaliation.
