Nightly Continues Strong Across-The-Board Growth Year Over Year

NEW YORK (May 17, 2016) – “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt” was the #1 evening newscast across the board again last week, averaging 8 million total viewers for the week of May 9-13, 2016. Nightly averaged 1.879 million A25-54 viewers, outperforming ABC by +218,000 (+13%) and CBS by +345,000 (+22%), marking the NBC broadcast’s widest demo margin over ABC in seven weeks (since week of March 21, 2016).

Nightly has been #1 in total viewers for 14 consecutive weeks and 44 of the 47 weeks since Holt was named anchor. Among the A25-54 demo, the NBC broadcast has been ranked #1 for 42 consecutive weeks and over 10 straight months. Among A18-49 Night has been #1 for 42 consecutive weeks and over 12 straight months. Season to date, Nightly is the #1 evening news program in total viewers, A25-54 and A18-49 viewers.

Versus the same week last season, America’s most-watched evening newscast posted the largest audience gains in total viewers (+4%, or +285,000) and A25-54 viewers (+4%, or +65,000) while also increasing in A18-49 viewers (+2%, or +27,000).

Weekly Highlights:

  • Nightly averaged 7.954 million total viewers, +193,000 (+2%) ahead of ABC World News Tonight and +1.186 million (+18%) more than CBS Evening News.
  • Nightly averaged 1.879 million A25-54 viewers, outperforming ABC by +218,000 (+13%) and CBS by +345,000 (+22%).
  • Nightly has ranked #1 in A25-54 and A18-49 for 42 consecutive weeks and 46 of the 47 weeks since Lester Holt officially became anchor.
  • This was Nightly’s widest demo margin over ABC in seven weeks (week of March 21, 2016).
  • Nightly won all five evenings among A25-54 viewers.
  • Nightly averaged 1.320 million A18-49 viewers, topping ABC by +141,000 (+12%) and CBS by +258,000 (+24%)
  • Versus the same week last season, Nightly posted the biggest gains in total viewers (+4%, or +285,000) and A25-54 viewers (+4%, or +65,000) while also increasing in A18-49 viewers (+2%, or +27,000).

Season to Date:

  • Season to date, Nightly is the #1 evening news program in total viewers, A25-54 viewers, and A18-49 viewers.
  • Nightly averages 8.855 million total viewers, +268,000 (+3%) ahead of ABC and +1.493 million (+20%) more than CBS.
  • Nightly is the only evening news program with year-over-year growth among A25-54 viewers this season.
  • Nightly has widened its A25-54 lead vs. ABC by 196,000 viewers versus last season (+199,000 lead this season vs. a +3,000 lead this time last year).
  • Nightly averages 1.547 million A18-49 viewers, outperforming ABC by +192,000 (+14%) and CBS by +389,000 (+34%)
  • Nightly has more than doubled its A18-49 advantage over ABC versus last season (up 106% vs. a +93,000 lead last season)
